DISCUSSION 1 QUESTION

Ethical Consulting

A company that needs help with implementing a process you have little familiarity with has contacted you. Although you could most likely learn it, you would not be a subject matter expert in the period in which they need you. You are certain you could learn the process and could use the extra income, as your consulting has been a little slow. What are the implications for deciding not to take the assignment?  What are the implications for taking the assignment? What would you do and why?  Respond to two classmates’ posts.

Consultants are often described as helpers (Lippitt & Lippitt, 1986; Schein, 2011). Yes I will help the company out to gain more experience and earn a little extra income. In order to accomplish something you have to have on hand experience. So, this would be a great opportunity for me. I do not think this experience would be hard to accomplish do to it being a little familiar to me. I think staying positive and remaining focused will help me prosper with this challenge. The positive implication of taking on this duty is earning extra income and on hand  experience. The negative implications of taking on this duty is not being able to fulfil the company needs. But, this implication only happens to a negative person. I believe anybody who puts their mind to something they able to accomplish it. Nobody is perfect and you will always run into stumbling blocks in the road. But, each person experience things to build them up stronger.

Hello Class,

What are the implications for taking the assignment? What would you do and why?

From what I have found through readings, is that consultant’s help businesses create and make a change go smoothly within the organization. According to Bierema (2014), “consultant as apractitioner of OD who has specialized knowledge of the action research process and facilitationskills to lead organizations through planned change” (Ch.3.1). First thing that I would let the client know is that I am not familiar with the process, but I do my very best in helping out with the change. In my head I know that business is slow for me but I would not want to burn any bridges for future projects within the company. The main thing to be is honest with the client and it might help you at that time or in the future. Really the only reason that I would not take the job is because I am not familiar with the company’s process. Some things that would persuade me to take the job is that I could learn the process in a timely manner which would help me with the change that the company needs help in. One thing that gives me an advantage as an external consultant is that I have worked for many companies with organizational management and that is something that I can use to benefit the company. I would tell the client about past jobs and help the client out with the best of my ability to see the job pull through. According to Carby-Joseph (2017), “A consultant makes sure you effectively execute your plans, holding you accountable for carrying out tasks that achieve your goals” (p.43). The last thing that would be my selling point would be my planning process and how I would show the client my plans on helping out with their issues and what steps that I will take to make sure it happens. Planning in business is crucial to make sure no steps were missed in the process. Thanks for reading my post.

DISCUSSION 2 QUESTION

Experience with Consultants

Describe your experience with a consultant, either from your place of employment (current or previous), in the community, or as the consultant yourself. Thinking of this week’s lecture and the components of a contract, did he/she follow that process? If not, what was missed? Describe your experience.

If you do not have experience with a consultant, recall a situation from your experience where you would have benefited from having an OD Consultant. What would you have done as a consultant? Why? Respond to two classmates’ posts.

A consultant is someone who helps an individual or a company improve his/her image. I’ve never directly had a consultant, but the company that I work for hired a consultant.  We, as a company, feel like offering a credit card would help us boost our customer base, so we have a consultant that is supposed to help implement credit card services. I have worked with and spoken to him on many different occasions. After reading this week’s lecture and material, I would say that he did not follow the process.I feel as though he is stalled in the first part of the data collection and diagnosis phase. We have had numerous calls with our core provider concerning the implementation of these cards, yet we have seen no progress. After each call, he always tells us that he is going to work on what was discuss and get back with us, yet he never does. The sad thing is, he has been a consultant for us for at least 2 years and has nothing to show for it.

A contract is important because it helps consultants “assure their client they possess the expertise necessary for the project at hand.” (Week 2 Lecture). There are nine elements to a consulting contract: 1) boundaries of your analysis, 2) project objectives, 3) key information, 4) consultant’s role, 5) final product, 6) support and involvement from the client, 5) time frame, 6) confidentiality, 7) feedback. (Bierema, 2014, Ch. 3.4).

At my previous employment, the company wanted to implement a new training process. The new process involved an outside consultant coming in and observing us at work, and then giving us feedback. Looking at these nine elements, this consultant actually followed the process very well. There wasn’t an actual formal contact like this one, but we had a company wide meeting where the consultant told us about the new project, the objectives, key information about how she would be observing us, and what the final expectations were. I think the areas that were not as clear were the final product and the time frame. We all knew that the final product was for us to improve in our positions, but there were no benchmarks or goals, so we weren’t exactly sure when we were at the level that she wanted us at. Every time she observed us, she always had more useful suggestions, but it was always unclear how far we were from the end goal, or what the end goal was. This kind of goes hand in hand with the time frame, because again her consultation seemed to be ongoing. We never knew when we would be observed or would be getting feedback until we saw her show up to observe us. And we did not know how long she would be working with each of us individually or with our company as a whole.
